Abstract

Arteriovenous malformations are determined by embryological defects and can be classified as congenital or secondary to some injury. This narrative review aims to address intestinal vascular malformations regarding their embryological origins, challenges for diagnosis, treatment, and prognosis. Electronic databases such as PubMed, SciELO, Science Direct, and medical journals were consulted. The included articles were searched in Portuguese and English, with a limitation of 40 years in relation to the year of publication. The clinical presentation accompanying an intestinal malformation is broad, but rectal bleeding is present in a good portion of cases. Comorbidity is confused with other diseases that also cause bleeding, so investigation should always be thorough. Treatment should be defined cautiously, taking into consideration the patient's opinion and medical history.
