Abstract

This article presents an experience report on the use of original songs as an active learning methodology in the teaching of biosciences, specifically molecular biology. The activity took place in August 2025 with first-semester undergraduate students enrolled in the Biomedical Sciences program at UFRJ. It was implemented within a course entitled Macromolecular Biochemistry, during its first 30-hour module on Molecular Biology. Over the course of four hours, students were organized into groups and engaged in stages that included: (i) selecting key terms, (ii) composing rhymed poems, (iii) transforming the poems into song lyrics, (iv) brief rehearsal, and (v) collective performances for their peers. As a result, seven songs were produced—four original compositions and three parodies—addressing concepts related to DNA, RNA, chromatin, replication, transcription, translation, genome, and transcriptome. Significant levels of engagement, joy, and affective involvement were observed, although some groups faced challenges during musical composition. This integration of science and art contributed to the intended goals, namely: placing students at the center of the teaching–learning process, supporting concept memorization and content retention, fostering “pleasure activism,” and strengthening emotional bonds. The report highlights the potential of music as a pedagogical resource to promote meaningful learning in biosciences, combining youth protagonism, playfulness, critical thinking, and affectivity within the educational process.

Author Biographies

Solange Cabral Lima, Laboratório de Ciência, Arte e Educação

Solange Cabral de Lima is a researcher at the Inclusion and Diversity Laboratory (LID) at the State University of Rio de Janeiro (UERJ) and at the Laboratory of Science, Art, and Education of the Institute of Medical Biochemistry (IBqM/UFRJ). She holds a Bachelor’s degree in Biological Sciences from the Associação Fluminense de Educação (AFE), a Specialization in Science Education from UFRJ, and a Specialization in Special Education and Technological Innovation from UFRRJ. She also earned a Professional Master’s degree in Education, Management, and Dissemination in Biosciences from IBqM/UFRJ.

A retired teacher from the Municipal Education System of Duque de Caxias, she has extensive experience in early childhood education and in the final years of elementary school. Throughout her career, she developed numerous pedagogical materials with her students, including choreographies, paper-folding activities, readings of supplementary literature, and the use of animated films in science classes. In 2021, she supervised two student-produced videos that received awards.

Her research interests include teacher education with a focus on human rights, artScience, inclusive education at both basic and higher education levels, and the development of collaborative and participatory practices in Science Education and Environmental Education.

Erivaldo Fraga da Silva, Laboratório de Ciência, Arte e Educação, IBqM, UFRJ

Erivaldo Fraga da Silva holds a Bachelor’s degree in Music Education and a Bachelor’s degree in Conducting from the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ). He completed his Master’s (2014) and Ph.D. in Sciences (Education, Management, and Dissemination in Biosciences) (2024) at the Leopoldo de Meis Institute of Medical Biochemistry (IBqM/UFRJ). He is the principal conductor of both the Duque de Caxias Symphony Orchestra and the Ilha do Governador Chamber Orchestra, in Rio de Janeiro. He also serves as a teacher in elementary education for the Municipality of Rio de Janeiro. Erivaldo has participated as a conductor and guest professor in national and international music festivals held in the states of Amapá, Rio Grande do Norte, Minas Gerais, São Paulo, and in Newark, New Jersey (USA). His areas of interest include arts, music, education, neuroscience, music therapy, and the social sciences.

Julio Alberto Mignaco, Laboratório de Ciência, Arte e Educação, IBqM, UFRJ

Julio Mignaco is a biologist who has served as a professor at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ) since 1997. His academic career has been devoted to research in enzymology, bioenergetics and biotechnology, areas in which he has developed extensive laboratory experience. From early on, he has been an advocate for creative and interdisciplinary approaches to teaching, integrating performance, music, dance, and storytelling into the classroom to inspire undergraduate students. In recent years, his interests have increasingly focused on the use of musical and theatrical performance as tools for science communication and outreach, as well as for enhancing learning experiences within academic settings. He is the author of several dozen scientific publications and firmly believes that science and technology are essential to a nation’s progress, while education and culture remain the fundamental drivers of social transformation.
