Abstract

Some studies have demonstrated greater surgical difficulty and a higher conversion rate in laparoscopic cholecystectomies in male patients. The objective of this study was to evaluate whether there are differences in elective laparoscopic cholecystectomies between men and women. Thus, 115 women and 85 men undergoing laparoscopic cholecystectomies were prospectively evaluated. The mean age, 49.5 (±13.5) years, was higher in men than in women, 43.9 (±15.4) years (p = 0.0069). Surgical time was also higher, 60.1 (±21) minutes in men and 54.4 (±18.2) minutes in women (p = 0.046). There was no difference between genders in perioperative difficulties or conversion rate. However, conversions occurred only in the male group.
