Convivendo com DPOC: representações sociais da doença e impacto na qualidade de vida de pessoas idosas acometidas
Abstract
COPD is one of the main causes of morbidity and mortality worldwide, significantly affecting the quality of life of patients, especially the elderly. The aim of the study was to analyze the understanding of elderly people with COPD about the disease and its impact on their quality of life. Fifteen elderly people with COPD treated at a hospital outpatient clinic in Paraíba were interviewed. The semi-structured interviews were conducted individually. The data was analyzed using Iramuteq software. The results revealed that the majority were women, with low levels of schooling and family income. Most had other chronic diseases, such as hypertension and diabetes. The social representations of COPD included feelings of fear, anxiety and limitations in daily activities. The difficulties imposed by the disease, added to ageing, lead to a worsening quality of life. The care strategies adopted by the elderly included the use of medication, regular medical monitoring and family support. Thus, holistic approaches to caring for COPD patients are suggested, with nursing being of paramount importance in supporting and promoting health, offering educational interventions and rehabilitation programs. Understanding the needs and challenges faced is essential to ensure effective, patient-centered care aimed at improving their quality of life and well-being.
